Time Considerations
The art of calligraphy is an ancient technique. Calligraphers work slowly and carefully to make sure every curve and stroke is just as it should be. This unusual time investment in our busy and impatient world is one reason that calligraphy continues to be prestigious and highly valued today.
Variation and Consistency
Unlike computer-generated text, the beauty of calligraphy scripted by hand is in the natural variation in letter form. My hand will not always make each letter perfectly the same. Similarly, I will do my best to exactly center lines where requested, but there may be slight differences. These variations result in every piece of writing becoming a unique work of art.
Return Address Note
The US Post Office’s official position on return addresses is that they should be on the envelope front. They cite the possibility of an envelope going through their scanner face down, with the return address read as the front.
Millions of letters go through the USPS and international systems every day with the return address on the back, and I have never personally heard of this happening, nor have I heard about it from the many other calligraphers I’m in touch with. That said, please be aware that this is a risk that you are accepting by agreeing to have the return address on the envelope back.
